Ruth
McGillivray is a gifted singer/songwriter who delivers
soul-stirring blues, R&B and gospel with attitude, passion
and emotive story-telling. With a voice and style comparable
to Aretha Franklin and Bonnie Raitt, fans love the way
she sings with abandon and obvious joy. Ruth is a woman
who's lived a full life, taken a lot of hard knocks,
and followed her convictions. Ruth's new CD, River of
Soul, takes you on a journey of strength and survival--the
power and depth of her voice sends shivers down your
spine.
The
album was recorded in Surrey, B.C. at Whitewater Productions
under the direction of renowned producer, Roy Salmond.
"That's a story in itself." says Ruth, "I never dreamed
we could record with Roy--he's been producing artists
from all over North America for 30 years--but we met
through a mutual friend. Turns out Roy and I grew up
in the same circle of churches, and he couldn't believe
that one of those churches produced a blues singer.
'This I gotta hear', he said. After hearing the music,
he wanted to produce the album, but we couldn't afford
him or his studio. He liked the music so much that he
did it anyway and accepted what we were able to pay."
And the quality shows in the album production, musicianship
and mix.
Eleven of the twelve tracks are originals written and
performed by Ruth and guitarist, Sheldon Bradley,
accompanied by some of the finest musicians in Western
Canada. The last track is an acapella version of Amazing
Grace that will probably bring tears to your eyes.
